Bollywood @ $100 a day

Funny that no one thought of this before. Now One can get a Tour of Bollywood ( Tour to Filmistan Studio,Entertainment shows,Meeting with Film personalities) thanks to the efforts of Suniel Shetty & Renuka Chowdhury (Tourism Minister) . If properly packaged this could be a great idea to attract tourists. Here is the article on Rediff.

Let us face it. Despite the inane movies (At least 75% of them), Bollywood is a huge brand Outside India. Be it the US,UK,Middle east or South East Asia , Bollywood enjoys a great following and tremendous brand recognition.

Such a tour would be wonderful Oppurtunity to ride this brand wave and also a potent platform to attract tourists.

These are some personal experiences I have had with " Brand Bollywood" Outside India :

1. Met a African-american Cab driver in the US a few years ago who was a big fan of Dharmendra and had watched Sholay 26 times. He refused to accept money from us after the "Bollywood Talk" in the cab .

2. A Singaporean co-student in my Chinese Class is a big fan of Shah Rukh Khan and has his entire DVD Collection (He knows no hindi).

3. The Thai tourist guides greeted us with Hindi songs last week in Phuket.

4. Met an American at the San Francisco Bay , who gave me a Half an hour lecture on the greatness of Guru Dutt .

  • Its a nice idea, but a small hitch with meeting celebrities part. Do you really think people in the industry today with a truckload of attitude gonna cooperate.

Another thing to notice is the difference in scale between studios in US and india. The studios here have every imaginable setup i.e. wester, church, town etc etc. One ride through universal studios will be helpful here. In india, sets are impromptu and most of the time, shootings happen in real locations.

  • i sure think its a great idea - and wanted to blog on it - but mr cogito pandikki mundikkittar :)

new bollywood actors/actresses (read models) are one co-operative lot, even though they can't act, they sure know how to be more suave/presentable, and for $100 u bet they will be at their best

  • Ila, Its a big topic to debate. But Ignorance is not bliss in this case.

Kaats,I think we need to be proud of what we have.WHat we lack by Infrastructure we compensate by our rich culture. The Star gazing is accidental & not guarenteed ! ( Do you remember the Whale watching trips they take you to in the US , the sighting of Whale cannot be guaranteed and its your luck if you spot one).

Hari,Yeah its a great idea and hope we implement it properly.
