Main Hoon Na and the Bengal Tigers

I am normally very skeptical about the "popular" bollywood movies. I normally prefer to watch the Ram Gopal Verma types than the maudlin, artifical SRK/Karan Johar / Aditya Chopra ones. However, at the urging of a friend I agreed to see "Main Hoon Na" , which was telecast on Central TV Channel on Sunday night. Even with infinite patience I couldn't sit through the movie for more than an hour. SRK's Cycle rickshaw chase of a Jeep and the college where everyone is a "walking fashion parade" was too much to take. There is a fine line between "no logic" and "absurdity" ..... Its a shame that this movie was a super-hit last year .

Thankfully I switched channels. Animal Planet Channel had a very interesting program on the "Royal Bengal Tigers". The Bengal tigers are very unique because they share their ecosystem with a variety of animals like Crocs, dolphins, turtles, sharks and fishes. The Tigers swim between the islands in search of prey. Also the Sunderban tigers have been accused of being man eaters. It showed how the humans have forced these wonderful animals to become man-eaters.

Also of great interest was how the humans protect themselves from tigers . They often wear masks with human face on their back side (since the tiger attacks from rear) and how human dummies fitted with electric wires from car batteries are rampant (they administer a shock when touched by a tiger, training tigers not to attack humans).

I have never been to the Sunderbans. Got to plan a trip to Sunderbans and Chilka(in Orissa) to see the Bengal Tigers and the rare Olive Ridley turtles.

  • I have a new use for Sundarbans (this can be some kind of an advertising gimmick for it):

    Sundar Bans
    Jaao Aur
    Sundar Bano

  • As a policy decision, I try and avoid SRK movies as much as possible.

  • Really a pathetic movie. Chasing Scorpio in a cycle rickshaw....& still it's called a great movie... I really pity them. Moreover, the other guy, who is called "Hero of tomorrow", doesn't even look like a man.

  • Thennavan, thatz a nice slogan !

Rest all, What is sad is we continue to reward mediocrity.Heard Anu Malik got the best MD award for the movie. The Intro song I know is inspired from a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Qawwali ..

  • Hi..looks like the cycle-rickshaw scene in MHN has really pissed a great no of people off...but heck!!! you say a movie is bad just for 1 or 2 or even 5 scenes? Not every movie is Sholay or Black...Picture Perfect!!!!
I am really pinched by that line of yours "Its a shame that this movie was a super-hit..". What u dont like is not universal choice. And it has been already proved umpteen number of times earlier that public doesnt always take nonsense. If this movie has been accepted, then it's no shame... its just that your choice is a bit different from a million other people...Hey..this is no preaching but didnt expect this from a sensible blog like yours... I am sure that all those stunts in MHN would have been lapped up easily if they were from a Spielberg's or Scott's movie...
Having said all this, I am no SRK fan....but dont mind movies like MHN..

  • Anonymous, perhaps you are right. I probably went a bit over the board. I have no problems with such a movie becoming a superhit.Afterall its the people's verdict.

But the fact that we continue to reward medicrity is a cause of concern. We continue to make "formula" movies and truly creative films come once in a blue moon.I like Hindi movies a lot and perhaps the outburst was out of concern and not out of arrogance.

Is movie making all about money making ?
