Moral Policing ( Also posted at Indophiles)

The state of Tamil Nadu - the abode of conservatism, finds itself again under national spotlight. The recent moral policing episodes do not do any good to the state's image . An Actress is attacked verbally and with rotten eggs for her opinion , the Anna University passes a dress code for students and media (certain section) & police become cultural torch bearers by invading a Bar. All these attackers have different agenda, none of which is noble. Also such Blatant intolerance of Individual freedom is shocking & despicable.

Whether the remarks made by Khusboo are right or wrong is besides the point. But I fully support her right to say whatever she feels. As Voltaire said " "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".

Thankfully , there seems to some respite. Karthi Chidambaram (Son of P.Chidambaram - FM) & Kanimozhi (Daughter of M.Karunanidhi) have joined hands to start a portal named " Karuthu" to uphold freedom of expression.A small step in the right direction.

What is happening now is not moral policing but amoral policing.

  • What Khusboo said was absolutely wrong...If she wanted publicity..she could have chosen some other way.

Whatever she said though was a fact (abt having pre marital sex). I saw an show in NDTV (with Cho Ramasamy talking about this issue), in which he had stated age old Sangam Literature(tamil) approves all those stuff said by Khusboo. So it is not anti-Tamil culture.

As for as Moral Policing goes...what else Tamil Police can do to full fill their KRA's? Catch thieves/murderers???

  • Yeah, Freedom of speech is very important in a good Democracy. I am glad thAt the off-springs of the bigwigs in Politics are taking their time and efforts to bring out websites like Karuthu, which IMHO is a very nice idea.

Thanks for letting us know about this.

  • The entire episode is a reflection of a perverse mind. Coming in close heels of the Park Sheraton fiasco. Why do not they extend to the adult movies, there are plenty on pre-marital ones ( nicely said, subtly said and openly said), live-in relations (Salam Namaste is a big hit). There plenty of visual and written material flowing quite easily on this. Jayakanthan's stories have liberal use of that, yet each and every one of the stories is a gem.
If globalisation has brought in some of those liberalistic concepts to the open to Chennai ( it may not be a news elsewhere in India), let us face it or fatefully accept the way West behaves in personal (contractual) lives.
